『コーラスライン』 - BUNKAMURA オーチャードホール

義弟にお願いして入手したチケットで、ブロードウェイミュージカル『コーラスライン』を観に行ってきました。

20代の頃、映画版をビデオで観て以来、いつか観たいと思っていた念願の舞台です。
学生時代初めての一人旅でニューヨークを訪れた際にもまだ上演していたと思いますが、終盤の頃で、『キャッツ』や『オペラ座の怪人』『Butterfly』などの方が人気でした。

ちなみにそのとき私はJazzをテーマにした別のミュージカルを観ました。号泣するくらい感動して、数ヵ月後再び訪れた際にもう一度観たのですが、タイトルは忘れてしまいました。傑作といわれるものではなかったのでしょうね。

映画版については賛否両論あるようですが、私の大好きな映画の一つです。
DVDも買って何度も観ていますが、昨年11月に映画『ブロードウェイ♪ブロードウェイ』を観て、舞台版がどうしても観たくなりました。

映画版と、ドキュメンタリー版と、舞台版。
舞台がオリジナルだとわかっていても、やはり比べてしまいますね。



一番良かったと思ったのは、キャシーが"The Music and the Mirror"で踊ったソロです。
その柔軟でかつダイナミックなスピード感溢れるダンスに圧倒されました。

映画『ブロードウェイ♪ブロードウェイ』を観て楽しみにしていた、マギーの"At the Ballet"でのソプラノも期待通りでした。

一方、同じく期待していたポールの独白は、『ブロードウェイ♪ブロードウェイ』のオーディションでのシーンがあまりに感動的すぎて、逆に物足りなさを感じました。
今回男性陣がリッチー役の人を除いて、背の高さや髪型も同じような白人の人ばかりだったので、女性陣に比べるとキャラクターが立っていないように感じられました。


私の好きなリッチーの"Surprise, Surprise"は、映画版だけの曲。もう一つ好きな"What I Did for Love"は、キャシーではなく、全員＋ダイアナのソロでした。キャッシーが歌ったほうがストーリーとしてしっくりくるような気がしたのは、翻訳のせいでしょうか？オリジナルの生みの親であり、育ての親であるマイケル・ベネットが、映画制作中に手を引いたという（噂がある）のも、こういった解釈の違いに我慢ができなくなったからなのでしょうね。

5. "Surprise, Surprise" (replaces "Hello 12, Hello 13, Hello Love", although one verse of the song is heard in the film. The monologues of Mark, Connie, Judy, and Greg which are part of this number are performed in other parts of the film sans music)
